Tom Hades - Friday 26th @ 20.30

The Evening is a rush of Techno, completely Belgian style. The Belgium Techno Machine, Tom Hades plays live at 8:30 pm sharp.

Belgian waffles. Belgian chocolate. Tom Hades. Some things don’t need much of an explanation. Such is the case with the Belgian Techno don, whose career so far is leaning towards legendary status.

Never one to flee from globetrotting, Tom Hades’ DJing has taken him around the world a multitude of times. From Fabric in London to Fabrik in Madrid, and from Awakenings to I Love Techno, his work ethic demonstrates a literal tour de force.

Hades is definitely going to turn CounterCulture into a techno station on 26th, hope to see you everyone for the event.

Melkote - for a Sunday outing

Melukote (Kannadaಮೇಲುಕೋಟೆ) in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya districtKarnataka, in southern India, is one of the sacred places in Karnataka. The place is also known as Thirunarayanapuram. It is built on rocky hills, known as Yadugiri, Yaadavagiri and Yadushailadweepa, overlooking the Cauvery valley. Melukote is about 51 km (32 miles) from Mysore and 133 km (83 mi) from Bangalore. It is a sacred pilgrim centre.
Melukote is the location of the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, with a collection of crowns and jewels which are brought to the temple for the annual celebration. On the top of the hill is the temple of Yoganarasimha. Many more shrines and ponds are located in the town. Melukote is home to the Academy of SanskritResearch, which has collected thousands of manuscripts.
Early in the 12th century, the famous Srivaishnava saint Sri Ramanujacharya, who hailed from Tamil Nadu, stayed at Melukote for about 12 years. It has thus become a prominent centre of the Srivaishnava sect.

Fly ! - Sunday 21st @ 19.00

Fly ! What happens when you astutely mix acoustic, electronic and video? You get FLY - a ‘delicious’ and a heady mix of jazz and experimental sounds!

FLY was selected by Le Monde as one of the top ten jazz albums in 2010!  Laurent de Wilde, the most electro among the French jazz pianists and Otisto 23, sound Engineer, a master chef in improvisation are accompanied on stage by Nico Ticot, a virtuoso videographer and a founder member of XLR project. The image that the latter creates in real time literally encompasses the musicians on stage and is totally in sync with this intuitive and organic genre of music.

With an enjoyable grouping of structuring and restructuring of piano sounds, Laurent de Wilde and Otisto 23 dive headlong into a conversation that intensifies into an orb of pure sound or fines tunes to such an extent that it transforms into the infinitesimal and the undecipherable.

"Banyan" often refers specifically to the Indian banyan or Ficus benghalensis, the national tree of India, though the term has been generalized to include all figs that share a unique life cycle, and systematically to refer to the subgenus Urostigma. Dhaaty Navaratra Mahotsava | Puppet theatre - from 17th to 24th, everyday at 18.30

Dhaatu Navaratra Mahotsava

Founders of Dhaatu, Anupama and Vidyashankar Hoskere and family have been celebrating the Navaratra Utsava since 1995 in this manner where the display is open to public.  The festival itself is being celebrated in the family from times immemorial. The beginnings of this festival, which is a garland of many events originates from the Vedic period. It can be traced to the Indra Dwajotsava of the rig vedic period. Later  we have the Vijayadashami as the conquest of Rama over Ravana, Navami as the Kshatra habba from the Mahabharata where Arjuna regains his Male form and the  Durga, Saraswathi Puja and Lakshmi puja from the Epic times. The concept of doll keeping has a historical background from the 1st century and stands for the concepts of Prakruti and Purusha which encompasses all of life.

At Dhaatu, a concentrated effort has been made to bring to the focus of children and adults alike to the richness and value of the Indian tradition and Mythology through the forms of Doll keeping and Puppetry . Hours, days and months pass by as the dolls of various kinds emerge to tell the glorious stories of our Land. Each year there is a main stage which has the large Gowri dolls telling fascinating tales of the Epics through a sound and light show.

This year the main stage has the story of Tripurantaka - of Shiva, Omkareshwara who does penance on the banks of river Narmada to gain strength to destroy the three evil worlds of Asuras.  He is supported in this by Vishnu, Brahma, Bhumi Devi, Shakti, Ashwini Devas, Agni, Vayu, Varuna, Kubera, Indra, Chakrapani, Mandara Mountain and Vasuki  who are all depicted doing their assigned tasks.

In addition there is a feature- Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum, which has Krishna's bala leela, Getopadesha, doll depiction of the essence of  the 14th chapter of Bhagavad Geeta  and the Mahabharata with Vyuhas.

The features of Traditional Steps, Ramayana, Shiva Purana, Temples of India, Astadikpalakas, Durga with her 9 forms being changed daily, The Dashavatara meery-go- round, Dussera Procession and Kashi are getting set up at Dhaatu.

There is also a cultural festival happening at the premises from the 17th through the 24th, daily at 6:30

Showcasing the revived Eachanoor Puppet Show
Eachanuru is a small town in Tiptur Taluk. The puppets of Bhagavatha emerged from here . A sample of these can be seen in the Mysore folk-lore museum. 4 years ago, I visited the museum with my Puppet Guru. Sri.M. R. Ranganatha Rao and my daughter Prakruti. He told me that he had seen one of the shows when he was a little boy. Never again said he who has seen 70 odd years of life.  He showed me a few of the Eachanoor puppets in the museum on display. He filled my imagination with stories of the beauty and glory of these puppets. I made up my mind that I would revive this - come what may. I applied for a senior fellowship in Puppetry from the Ministry of Culture for this purpose. The fellowship was granted.

The revival is now complete. The puppets of splitting Jarasandha and the Pandavas are ready. . The puppet play is titled Rajasuya Yaga. It has the episodes of Rukmini Parinaya, Jarasandha Vadhe and Shishupala Vadhe.  The premiere show of this will happen at the Dhaatu Navaratra Mahotsava- 2012,  on Monday Oct 22nd 2012 at 6:30 pm. The puppets will be played by the well trained members of the Dhaatu team.

Puppets are of the string kind and stylised. They are carved out of wood and have elaborate jewellery made of wood. Language is Kannada . Duration is 70mins.
 How was Dhaatu Navaratra Started
1995, the Navaratra Mahotsava was started to instill in our own children and their friends, values of life through the stories which were hidden behind the dolls. This was a time of bonding for us. The Navaratra has a lot of beneficial social aspects. Children relate to it as much as adults do. It is a very nice outlet for creative expressions and belonging and learning.  This made us decide that we would dedicate these ten days to express life through dolls.

Its come a long way since.

How many dolls are there at Dhaatu
Thousands. we haven't counted. sized 2inch to 11 feet.

The Invisible River - From Friday 5th

The Ganga: key to the hearts of 80 per cent of India’s population. A goddess revered, a goddess defiled. Does science always oppose religion? Is there a scientific basis for the sacredness of the river Ganges? If so, what would the politico-religious nexus do with this information?

A colourful cast of characters including a self-promoting priest, a scheming politician and a canny street urchin reveals that in India, everything is interconnected, and nothing is as simple as it seems.

The Names of Love - Thursday 18th @ 18.30

Directed by Michel Leclerc, 100 min

An amazingly rich and delightfully comic, this film deals with emigration, identity, family secrets, taboos, politics …

Michel Leclerc is Arthur Martin, an Avian Flu expert, whose name immediately brings to mind a well known French cooker brand. And Bahia Benmahmoud, an extrovert girl makes a point of sleeping with as many right-wingers as possible to win them over to the leftist cause. A very profound film which, by trying to unite two such dissimilar people, successfully spans the history of France, from the 1930's until today.

The direction is creative and unconventional. Jacques Gamblin is perfect here as the dull biologist slowly opening himself to real life. In a wild and a passionate role, Sara Forestier gives her best performance since “L'Esquive”. Also to be noted are Zinedine Soualem as Bahia's sweet Algerian - born father, Carole Franck as his energetic militant wife, Jacques Boudet and Michèle Moretti as Arthur's parents. And of course Lionel Jospin, who displays a great sense of humour in his only scene. If you like unusual movies that make you both smile and reflect, this one is for you.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile - Saturday 13th @ 19.30

Einstein runs into Picasso in a bar in Paris. And it's not the beginning of a joke. Tahatto presents Steve Martin's highly-celebrated comedy play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile. It focuses on a chance encounter between Albert Einstein and Picasso, both at the brink of greatness, and in the prime of their youth. And the historic location for the encounter happens to be The Lapin Agile, a quaint cabaret/bar - a regular haunt for a bunch of quirky, yet lovable characters who have no idea what's about to hit them. There are arguments on the meaning of beauty, the process of creation in art and science and predictions for the future. Abundant in characteristic Steve Martin wit, this evening in Paris is going to change how we see the word 'genius'.

Tickets: INR 200

Sex, likes and pokes - Sunday 7th @ 15.30 & 19.30

Sex, likes and pokes tells the story of three friends and their quest for sex. The play brings together slam poetry and theatre. It is a funny take on Facebook and the whole online dating phenomenon. Two friends make a bet on which is the better method to find an ideal mate-the Facebook way or the old school natural way. Both friends find flaws in their methods but come watch to see who actually wins. Sex Likes and Pokes is very Bangalore, very raw and very original. If you want to watch an adult comedy this play is for you. This play is definitely not for the faint hearted.

Ticket: INR 200

Krafff | Puppet Theatre & Dance - Saturday 6th @ 19.30

Four comedians appear on stage with long strips of paper that they unfold, cut, fold, compress and twist - a human-like effigy emerges, a paper figure, slightly taller than the four comedians who manipulate it in full view of the audiences.

The dancer and the puppet embark on an unusual pas de deux, which concretely tests on stage the question asked by Kleist in his famous philosophical short essay "On the Marionette Theatre": which of the two is more gracious  -   the puppet or the living human body? In Krafff, each has its own advantages and its own limits. Duet … duel, this choreographic score actually involves a triple listening and writing of the body: that of the flesh and blood body, that of the paper dancer, and that of the four bodies dedicated to this unique body, giving shape and rhythmic impulse to its movements.

An intelligent and artistic mix of puppet theatre and dance, Krafff is a visual delight. Esthetic and surprising, it takes audiences into a dream world where poetry meets compassion.

Sumathi Murthy

Hindustani classical musician and composer

Though the Agra Gharana style is understood to be a very masculine style of singing some artists like Zohra Bai Agrawali have explored this genre in a very different way. Agra Gharana is known for its delineation by building structures of the khayal to help listeners understand the lyrics and the emotions. It is creates an abstract visual experience.
